6/25/10
Today we leave the ship. We are docked in Aswan still and are leaving for Cairo from Aswan airport aboard EgyptAir. We woke up at 6:00 to have our suitcases out and ready for pickup. We thought we were on time but were really dragging from the harsh pace of the last few days. There were crazy people who were up earlier than they needed to be and were chipper, CHIPPER! I don't understand it.
At breakfast we said goodbye to our friends the waiters in the restaurant. Two of them were with us a lot and we talked a lot.
After breakfast we boareded the bus after locating our luggage. We haven't had any luggage problems but one other person on the trip did have their luggage lost on one of our flights.
This is our longest domestic flight and it is several hours long. The last twenty minutes are the worst i've felt on the trips. They have been steadily increasing in pain level each flight. Our friend Carin was having worse trouble than me across the isle. Unfortunately Cairo airport was not ready for us and we circled twice. Neither of us appreciated that.
Going to our hotel is routine now especially since we are in the same hotel we were in the first week. Our rooms are still in the garden so we show Carin and her roommate how to get there since they stayed in a tower last time. On the bus trip to the hotel I saw Smash Tennis Academy. Yay!! I also saw clouds for the first time in this sunny country. Sam said it would not rain though this late in the season.
After settling in our new rooms we decided to get rid of our last Egyptian pounds by shopping! I especially want a purse that says Egypt or Cairo all around it. I saw a bag that said Luxor like that at Karnak Temple and I hoped I could find one in Cairo before we left. Fortunately I did! And I found a pink Egypt bag for mom! I also bought a book with some of my last pounds after Karin's Christmas present. (A black cat like her cat Chet).
Right away we needed to go to the farewell cocktail. It is kind of boring but we find some of our friends to say goodbye to. We say goodbye to Sam one last time and I told her about this blog.
Earlier on the bus we had promised Dorothy a bottle of water since she was asked anyone for an extra. Well we had plenty saved so we offered her one of ours but we forgot to get her room number at the cocktail. So we spend some time with the front desk trying to find Dorothy and we find the other Dorothy on the trip. Fortunately we had gotten to know her too and it wasn't too too weird.
While we were searching for her I was watching a movie in English, football in English, and tennis in Arabic. After we found the correct Dorothy we visited her room in one of the towers. She thanked us for the water and mentioned something about tennis and wanting to watch. Well I knew the channel so I found it for her. She is a major tennis fan too. She knows stats and remembers matches just like me. We talked tennis and Karin and Mark got the bored look on their faces that I had whenever they started talking college football. Karin asked if that was how I felt and laughed with me.
After taking pictures of Dorothy's amazing view of the Nile we ate dinner in the outdoor cafe we walked through everyday to get to our rooms. The food was pretty good and what we expected. I even got a burger no cheese how I wanted it. It was great.
We get ready for our harrowing fourteen hour flight tomorrow back in our rooms. For me that means reading and watching tennis happily. I am arguing with the Arabic announcers in English. I have watched enough tennis to know what they are saying even through the language barrier. LOL

Day 11
Woken up this morning to the ship vibrating as it sails at four this morning, not fun. We sailed from Esna to Edfu during the early morning in order to make it to Edfu temple dedicated to the falcon god Horus. It was a diverting temple and I found good reliefs of Seshat the goddess of writing and history, and Thoth the ibis-headed god of wisdom. Karin found many cats and kittens who looked healthy and was happy.
After the temple I went up to the sun deck yet again. This is a wonderful tradition I have clung to and I am really going to miss it when I go home. The best part is how quickly you dry, so it's no hassel to get wet. ( Which is my usual deterrent) Grandma, Anne, Mark, and Karin joined me and we talked and gossiped about the sites and the other passengers. It was fun. Lunch was pretty good, normal.
After lunch I washed my hair and went up to the sun deck to dry off. I love how quickly my hair dries!!!!!! I am so going to miss it when I go home.
When we were getting ready to go to Kom Ombo temple we found another ship had docked right next to ours and were walking through ours to get to land. Grandma decided not to come with us, so it was only Karin, Mark, and I. The temple was cool, and I saw a relief of Ma'at the goddess of truth underneith an oracle of ancient times made for commoners. This temple was dedicated to both Horus and the crocodile god Sobek, so half is decorated with falcons and Hathor his bride, and the other half is decorated with crocodiles.
Karin was not feeling well so we walked back and left Mark to take a few more pictures.
I got back to find Dorothy and Grandma having a drink and talking in the lounge. I throught this a great idea and I got a drink too. I always get a diet coke and the guys at the bar know it by now. They see me coming and they have it ready almost by the time I get there.
Next is the port talk we have every night about where we are and what it going on for the rest of the night and the next morning.
Tonight is the night of the Egyptian dinner. This means we are supposed to dress Egyptian and the food is all authentic egyptian. (Well mostly anyway)
After the dinner we had Egyptian Night up in the lounge. My only concession to dressing Egyptian was a purple scarf meant for your head that I wrapped around my hips and my large ankh necklace. ( an ankh looks like a cross with a curved top like an upsidedown teardrop) Mark wore the King Tut headress with the cobra crown and pleated nemes. (nemes just means the cloth side part). Everyone throught we was a hoot. The headdress though is meant for his nephew. He'll never now unless he sees the pictures we took of Mark. The DJ also gave me a tourquoise belly dancer hip wrap that I put on top of my purple one. It wasn't a bad effect.
Bassem is our mc for the party and of course he, Sam, and Jihan are all decked out and look way better than the rest of us. Each group came up for a group shot with their program director.
Then the real party started. We were all invited onto the dance floor for a dance competition. As we were the last group up, we stayed on to try it out. Every once in a while Bassem would stop the music and tell us to get in groups of however many. If you didn't find yourself in a group, you were out. Karin and Grandma left Mark and I up there. His long arms served us well. I lasted until the final six and he lasted till the final three. I received many complements on my dancing basically because I was one of the few who can move their hips independently. Bassem even came up and danced with me. It was a whole lot of fun though I was embarrassed laughing for most of the time.
After the dance competition Bassem took four guys out into the hall and told them to pretend to be riding a motorcycle. He told us to pretend they all had Pharaoh's revenge ( yes it is like Montezuma's revenge) We were laughing hysterically for twenty minutes straight. We wouldn't tell the guys though until the end so they were confused. Hehehe.
Next Bassem called up a couple from each group for the mummy wrapping contest of course. This was funny in who each program director picked to participate. It was another good laugh.
Next was free dancing, and surprisingly this time we stayed. We sat out the first dance then got up for the next, it was a latin dance. I'm not up there two seconds when the DJ comes out, grabs my hand, and starts teaching me the merengue. I keep laughing over my mistakes until I get it. I got it pretty quick though and it was so much fun. He kissed my hand when the song ended, and then we all left for our cabins. I got a few complements on the merengue on my way out and Mark had several requests for pictures with his headdress.
Tomorrow we arrive in Aswan. Home of the famous dam and supposedly the best place to buy papyrus.
Tune in tomorrow for more of Sarah's Egypt Adventure.

Day 10
While we were going through a large lock, several small boats attached to our ship. Then, the people on board whipped out bags of clothing and table clothes etc to sell on the boat. They threw the merchandise up to our third deck sun deck and negotiated from the water. If you liked the product you threw the money down in a bag, if you didn't, you threw it back. It was hilarious and I got a bad picture of it through the glass, because if you opened your window they threw stuff to you too! It lasted until we were through the lock and out of reach.

Day 9
We are docked at Qena. It is where we docked yesterday for an optional tour of the city. It is the cleanest city in all of Egypt; there is a contest every year, and it has won the last few years. And by clean I mean clean, no trash, local areas taken care of, etc.
We woke up and after breakfast bussed it to Denderah temple. This is a greco-roman temple(built during greek or roman occupation of Egypt) for the cow goddess Hathor. The far side of the temple has one of the few remaining reliefs depicting Cleopatra and her cartouche. There were some beautiful reliefs all around, the colors are amazing.
Once inside the temple, past the hathor-headed coloumns, you look up to see a beautiful blue decorated ceiling and a black ceiling. Restoration is at work here. A cleaning solution that will not interfere with the paint is being applied to the ceiling to restore it to its former glory.
We go through the temple and walk our way up to the roof of the temple. Once there we see a modern relief for the very first horoscope. It was named after the god Horus. The horoscope was taken by the Louvre to be studied, and has never been returned. the view from the roof is amazing and you can see for miles.
Next we climb the whole way back down and some of us go even farther into the crypt of the temple. There are no mummies there, it was never used for bodies. Beautiful jewels and precious treasures were found here. It is small and a squeeze to get through, but the colored reliefs inside are amazing. Up close and personal. Anne went with me and on our way out she gave me her camera to take a picture of her climbing back out. She was not the only one who did this, and it became a great joke.
I found Mark on the way out as Grandma and Karin left earlier with Dorothy to sit by the shops and cool off. Grandma bought a red hat to protect her head from even more sunburn. I asked Mark to take a few pictures of me next to a huge column and in front of the temple with my phone so I could send the pictures to Mom along with the update.
When we met up with Dorothy, apparantly Grandma and Karin had been talking about why I chose Egypt for a senior trip, so she gave me a hug and told me I will make a wonderful Egyptologist because I have the passion for it. It was really sweet and I really hope one day it will be true.
When we got back to the River Anuket I changed and headed up to the pool deck with a book and a water bottle. It is paradise up here. The view of the riverbank is beautiful, and the pool is perfect for my purposes. I sat in the shallow water edge that was most of the pool and read. The water came up to my waist while sitting and I was perfectly cool while sunbathing and reading. I feel great after being out in the hot sun all morning.
We are skipping dinner today because after lunch we really weren't hungry and we were promised popcorn with our movie in the lounge after dinner. We were watching Death on the Nile. I shopped during dinner before going up to claim a seat. I bought a red carnelian and alabaster vase for Mom, a camel sandglobe for Austin, and little statues and pyramids for my librarians.
We were the first ones who went to claim a seat in the lounge and got the best seats and several refills of poporn. We were the only ones who really wanted it, and some of the other people gave us theirs. I really enjoyed the movie even though I couldn't get through the book and the movie was pretty old.
Today was a really great day.

Day 8
Definately sick.
I'm feeling better, and I'm not getting sick anymore. But I'm still out of it and could not imagine walking through direct sunlight over rough terrain all morning. It was NOT happening no matter how much I wanted it to.
Grandma stayed with me because she's not feeling so well either, and she doesn't care as much by now. Karin offered to stay home instead, but she ended up going. She felt miserable most of the time and didn't participate in everything.
Once everyone was returning to the ship for lunch, Sam called my room to check up on me. She told me to go to lunch and that it should help. Turns out the frozen ice cream helps; go figure the cold is what I was really craving. Sam came over to check on me and she was please with how I was feeling. I think I'm going to be ok for tomorrow.
I hung out in Kj's room after lunch, and she and Mark had brought me back a present from the alabaster workshop. They make pieces there the same way it has been shaped for thousands of years. Kj said Mark picked out the blue lapis lazuli cat statue to match my Sekhmet statue. Its very pretty and I like it a lot. They also brought back pictures from the Valley of the Kings in postcard size. NO pictures can be taken in the tombs, so they sell pictures this way.
I haven't told mom I've been sick in my daily text message, and I'm not planning on doing so until I get home. She will just worry and mess up her own day worrying about me while I'm feeling better.
After dinner Mark suggested we all play a game in the "library" area. We played british monopoly. Grandma was in position to win when she decided she just didn't care and made silly moves in order to lose. I hope she and Karin feel better tomorrow and that tomorrow will be more exciting. Tomorrow is the temple of Denderah.
Tune in tomorrow for the continuation of Sarah's Egypt Adventure

Day 3
Today was EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES DAY!! The long-awaited day where I could finally see all to my heart's content. The only problem was....... NO Cameras Allowed. I couldn't believe it. Apparantly this is a rule in all Egyptian museums, no cameras. To compensate I bought postcards and playing cards as per my usual. The museum was wonderful though, and Sam knew so much about everything. Karin and I were too short to see what Sam would be talking about, so we would wander around and come back to it later. My favorite artifact was probably the collosus of Tiye. It was so majestic and strong.
Next came the mummy room. The most famous Pharaohs and queens of Egypt are kept here and I even saw the mummy proclaimed to be Hatshepsut. I've seen the search for her body on discovery channel and now I'm seeing the results!! Many of the mummies were so well preserved.
Unfortunately I did not know there were TWO mummy rooms and I missed the body of Queen Tiye!! Karin and Mark saw her though and said she was beautiful.
I bought another silver ankh charm... big surprise. As well as two cat statues and stamps. There is a post office in the garden outside of the museum and I bought stamps to send postcards.
Today is also the orientation lecture; very long, very dry, very repetative, and very boring. Also, an american woman named Sarah who married an Egyptian man and lives in Cairo.
Finally today is the at-home dinner. My group and about fifteen others are going to the apartment of a woman named Sheri (i'm sure she spells it differently). She, her husband, and her three boys live there. But, as her oldest is getting married, she is planning the next step for their lives.
In Egypt, the males need to provide a dowry, the house, the wedding, and half of the furniture. So, sheri needs to build or buy three houses. She is planning on building three villas and will live in an annex in her youngest's house. Wow. What a place to be a girl!
The food was interesting and I didn't even try some of it. The rest was not at all how I thought it would be. They seem to put this one spice I don't like in ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! I liked the chicken. The rest wasn't tooooo bad if I stopped paying attention to texture.
Later we had a group photo, and Sheri's son had trouble with my camera. So I checked it out later. My camera chip is FRIED! As in no pictures exist and no more can be taken. I don't know what to do. My four day old camera is broken!
After conferring with Karin and Mark, I text mom with my special international plan about the problem. She read me the manuel, then raced to Best Buy. Once there she met with the person who sold it to us and they tried to fix it from half a world away. Their best solution is to buy another chip. Now where am I going to be able to do that?!?!?!
I guess I'll have to hope for the best and rely on everyone else for pictures. Yikes! I bought this camera even though it was expensive for it's panoramic capabilities. Well I guess THATS out.

Day One
6/12/10
Today begins my Egyptian Adventure. True, day one starts and continues mostly in the United States, but every story needs some background.
Drive the three hours to JFK airport.
Arrive FIVE HOURS EARLY to wait in line to check our luggage and for me to realize i forgot my lock. We sit and sit and sit. We watch the football match U.S. vs Great Britain. Meet a lot of people from the Grand Circle Tour. Meanwhile I am having a revelation.
I AM THE YOUNGEST PERSON ON THE TOUR. This tour is meant for ages 55 and up.
Mom is beginning to react to the separation, and she even got me a texting plan before we left. My three year old phone is old enough that it will work in Egypt where only At&T exists. I have the only communicative capabilities on this trip.
We board. We are in a four across and I am stuck in the middle. Great.
Movies- Invictis- ok New Moon- UGGHHHHHH can't escape!! Did You Hear About the Morgans -funny
Twelve hours of screaming children when you are trying to sleep to arrive at Cairo Airport.
I don't know if we will survive.
Toon in tomorrow to see if we survived the worst flight in the history of flights!

Hey Everyone!
This marks the first official post of my new Blog dedicated to documenting my Egyptian trip.
I will try to post from Egypt directly but if i cannot find a computer, i'll post everything from home exactly as it happened.
I apologize now for the history lessons i'll probably sneak in with the pictures and anecdotes but bear with me because I think it'll be interesting anyway.
Enjoy!
